The short version: in Africa, the tractor truck matters more than the trailer in one specific way — it’s the part you can’t fix cheaply. You can repair a trailer almost anywhere with basic welding and a hammer. A broken powertrain strands a loaded rig 400 kilometres from the nearest dealer who knows the brand.
So when fleets in West Africa choose a prime mover, they’re not shopping for the newest technology. They’re shopping for the thing their own mechanics can keep running.
The order: five HOWO tractors, bound for Lagos

In June 2026 we dispatched five SINOTRUK HOWO 6×4 tractor trucks to a Nigerian customer. Every unit completed factory inspection before leaving the yard, then moved to the international shipping port for final clearance and loading, bound for Lagos.
The customer chose the classic HOWO 371hp / 400hp heavy-duty series — a deliberately conservative decision, and a sound one. Here’s why it holds up.
Why HOWO keeps winning in West Africa
Fleet owners don’t choose these trucks because of marketing. Three properties do the actual work.
Torque at low speed, where you need it
The WD615 series engine with a manual transmission delivers high torque at low engine speed. That’s not a spec-sheet flourish — it’s the difference between pulling a loaded trailer out of a soft, muddy yard and sitting there spinning while someone finds a chain.
African routes are full of those moments: yard exits, steep unpaved gradients, sand after rain. An engine that makes its torque low down simply gets out of them. An engine that makes peak power high in the rev range needs a running start you don’t have.
A chassis that doesn’t crack under continuous load
Every load is heavy, and the road is rarely good. The build answers that with a reinforced multi-leaf spring suspension and a high-strength double-layer steel frame — engineered for rugged conditions without cracking under sustained pressure. In this market, frame cracking is the failure everyone has seen at least once. It’s the first thing experienced buyers look at.
Mechanics who already know the truck
This is the honest advantage and it’s worth being blunt about it. HOWO uses reliable mechanical systems rather than dense electronic control. The consequence is practical:
- Any competent fleet mechanic in Nigeria can service the vehicle
- Spare parts are available in almost every local market
- Downtime is measured in hours, not in weeks waiting for a dealer diagnostics session
Fully electronic European tractors are excellent machines. They become expensive machines when the nearest specialist is in another country and your truck is full of cargo.
What to inspect before the truck ships
Every unit we export goes through a multi-point inspection before it leaves the yard. This is the list worth demanding from any supplier, and worth reading carefully on your own inspection report:
| Check | What it catches |
|---|---|
| Engine pressure test | Compression problems, worn rings, valves that leak |
| Transmission check | Gear engagement faults, clutch condition, oil contamination |
| Full air brake line system testing | Leaks and pressure loss — the failure you find out about at the worst moment |
| Fifth wheel and coupling calibration | Trailer mismatch after arrival |
| Frame and suspension inspection | Cracking in the load path, flattened or broken leaves |
None of this is exotic. It’s basic diligence applied before the truck gets on a ship instead of after it clears customs in Lagos, where fixing a fault costs several times as much and delays your first revenue trip.
Match the truck to the trailer before you buy
A tractor truck is half of a combination, and the joining happens in two places: the fifth wheel coupling height and the pneumatic brake connections.
Get either wrong and you have a trailer that can’t be towed safely — or can be coupled but brakes badly, which is worse. This is why the five Nigerian units had both pre-calibrated at the factory: so that the combination works the moment the truck meets its trailer at Lagos, without a local adaptation workshop improvising a fix.
If you’re buying tractors and trailers from the same factory, insist on this. If you’re buying them separately, send the trailer specification to your tractor supplier before they build. The data you need is boring — coupling height, brake line pressure, electrical socket pinout — and it’s exactly the data that gets skipped.
Frequently asked questions
Are SINOTRUK HOWO tractor trucks good for African roads?
They’re one of the most widely supported heavy trucks on the continent, which is a large part of their value. High torque at low speed suits muddy yards and steep unpaved gradients, and mechanical systems mean local mechanics and local parts availability.
Why buy a mechanical truck instead of a more modern electronic one?
Because maintenance access decides your real operating cost. Where dealer support is thin and routes are remote, a truck any local mechanic can service keeps earning. Diagnostics quality matters more than sensor count.
What should be inspected before a tractor truck ships?
Engine pressure test, transmission check, full air brake line testing, frame and suspension inspection, and calibration of the fifth wheel coupling height and pneumatic brake connections.
Can I buy a used HOWO tractor instead of new?
Yes, and it’s a common route into African fleets — see our guide to new versus used purchases. What matters is the refurbishment process and inspection standard behind it, not the badge.
Which trailers match a HOWO 6×4 tractor?
These units were specified to pair with heavy-duty 3-axle flatbeds or rear dump tippers. Tell us which trailer you run and we’ll confirm the coupling specification before building.
Get a fleet quote for tractor trucks and trailers
Tell us your routes, payload, and the trailers you’ll pull. We’ll match the tractor configuration to the trailer, quote CIF to your port, and handle inspection, port delivery and documentation.
