Why High-Tensile Steel Matters: Q345B vs Ordinary Steel

People ask us all the time: why does your trailer cost more than the one next door? Usually the answer isn’t the paint, and it isn’t the brand decal. It’s the steel.

A semi-trailer is a ten-year purchase. We have customers in Africa and Central Asia still running ENXIN trailers we built over a decade ago. The frames are straight, the bodies still take a full load. That’s not luck. That’s what Q345B and T700 steel buy you, compared to what ordinary steel does after a few years of heavy work.

Here’s the short version of what we do: we build chassis frames from Q345B high-tensile steel and dump bodies from T700 high-strength plate, at our factory in Liangshan, Shandong — one of China’s recognized semi-trailer manufacturing bases. If you’re comparing quotes from different factories right now, read on. This tells you what to look for, and why it matters.

Three steel grades you’ll actually see

Every semi-trailer spec sheet says “high-strength steel.” In practice you’ll find three very different grades:

*Exact T700 values depend on plate thickness and which mill it came from. Always ask for the mill certificate (材质单) for each batch. A factory that hesitates to show it is telling you something.

One more thing for accuracy: since the 2018 revision of GB/T 1591, Q345 is also produced and certified under the newer name Q355. Same class of steel, essentially the same properties. If a supplier quotes Q355, don’t be confused — it’s the same material.

What “yield strength” actually means

It sounds technical, but it’s simple. Yield strength is the point where steel bends and doesn’t come back. Below that point, a loaded beam flexes and springs back. Above it, it stays bent. That’s where frame failure starts.

Higher yield strength gives you two things:

  • Same load, less steel. You can use thinner, lighter members and still carry the same weight.
  • Same frame, more headroom. The frame shrugs off abuse that would permanently bend a weaker one.

Q345B vs ordinary Q235: the real difference

Q345B yields at 345 MPa. Q235 yields at 235 MPa. That’s nearly 50% more. What does it look like in real use?

  • Stronger frame at the same weight. Main beams and cross members in Q345B carry the same loads with a wider margin.
  • Longer life under repeated loading. A trailer frame flexes on every trip — loaded, empty, bumpy, smooth. Q345B resists fatigue cracks far longer. This is where the “10-year service life” claims actually come from.
  • Better in cold climates. The “B” grade is impact-tested at 20 °C (34 J). If your trucks run in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, or anywhere with real winters, this matters. Q235 isn’t tested for it.

Fair warning: Q345B costs more per ton than Q235. We’ll be straight with you — it’s worth it. The price difference is small next to what you save in payload, repairs, and not replacing a sagging frame in year four.

T700: when weight turns into money

For the frame, Q345B is the right call. For the body — dump bodies especially — weight is money, and that’s T700’s job.

T700 yields at around 700 MPa, roughly double Q345B. Double the yield strength means thinner plates can do the same work. In practice, a T700 dump body ends up 15–20% lighter than the same body built in Q345B.

Why chase body weight? Because axle limits are law:

  • Every tonne you cut from the trailer is roughly a tonne of legal payload added back. You get paid for it on every trip, for years.
  • Lighter trailer, lower fuel and tire costs, especially on empty return legs.
  • In mining and construction, where trailers work daily, the extra payload alone usually pays back the higher plate cost within the first year.

The catch: T700 is harder to weld and costs more per ton. That’s why we use it selectively — body plates and floor — not for the whole trailer. Putting T700 in a chassis beam that mainly bends is wasted money. Building a mining dump body out of Q345B leaves money on the table. We do the math both ways on every order.

The weld matters as much as the steel

Here’s where cheap trailers fail. Anyone can buy T700 plate. Welding it properly is another story.

High-strength steel needs the right filler metal, controlled heat, preheating in cold conditions, and welders who actually know the material. Skip any of that and the welds crack while the plate is still fine.

Every ENXIN trailer is welded by trained operators, and welds are checked before shipment. That’s part of the quality control you’re paying for.

One thing buyers often get wrong: high-strength steel is not automatically rust-proof. Corrosion protection comes from the surface treatment, not the grade. All our trailers get weatherproof coating before they ship, which is why they hold up on humid coastal routes and in high-rain regions.

Quick answers to what we hear most

Is Q355 the same as Q345B? Essentially yes. Q355 is the newer name under GB/T 1591-2018 for the same class of steel.

How do I check the steel grade? Ask for the mill certificate per batch. A legitimate factory hands it over without blinking.

Does better steel cost more? Per ton, yes. Per tonne of payload over the trailer’s life, usually no. A lighter body earns its price back.

Is the whole trailer built in T700? No. T700 goes where weight pays — mainly bodies. Frames stay in Q345B for fatigue resistance and weldability.

The honest summary

  • Q235 ordinary steel: cheapest to buy, most expensive to own. You pay the difference in payload and repairs.
  • Q345B: the standard for quality trailer frames. Strong, weldable, proven over decades.
  • T700: earns its price wherever body weight turns directly into payload — dump trailers first.

When you compare quotes, ask two questions: which grade is in the frame, and which is in the body? Then ask for the mill certificates. The answers tell you more about a trailer’s real value than any brochure.
